Each class is a combination of flow, strength, and flexibility work based on varying Hatha styles. By using the breath as a foundation for the postures, you will build an internal heat that allows for increased strength and flexibility, and a calming of the mind. Class times range from 75-90 minutes.

HATHA YOGA: THE PHYSICAL YOGA
Hatha Yoga encompasses a variety of systems, or teaching styles. Yoga is personal, and though teaching methods vary, the benefits are the same. At Black Dog Yoga, most classes are based primarily on the Anusara and Ashtanga Vinyasa systems, which means that the classes focus on incorporating flowing movement and breath with good alignment and heartfelt spirituality. The speed of the flow and the style of instruction will vary from teacher to teacher, as each of our instructors is unique and may draw upon a range of disciplines and traditions. At Black Dog Yoga, there is precision and progression, there is vigorous movement, and there is a culture of fun and freedom, where classes are personal, inspiring, and innovative experiences.

Hatha & Hatha Flow
Linking poses and breath, building internal heat, and creating suppleness in the body, these classes can be vigorous or meditative, sound-tracked or not, depending on the teacher. Derived of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, and Viniyoga and developed in the West, these classes are more freeform than their progenitors, and will sometimes include detailed instruction, use of props, or instead more constant movement and/or long holds with a focus on even breathing.

Anusara & Anusara-inspired
Combining playfulness with elegant alignment principles and an uplifting heart-centered philosophy, classes taught in this style will require less breath-synchronized flow, and instead more alignment refinements that build the poses from the inner body to the outer body. These interactive classes will take on a workshop feel, as the flow is slowed for safe and instructive work on progressively-challenging poses.

SOME YOGA ETIQUETTE TO
ENHANCE EVERYONE'S EXPERIENCE

Everyone is required to sign in upstairs prior to entering class, even when the class is being held in the downstairs studio. This is how we do our bookkeeping, and it ensures that the instructors are paid accurately. Please take care of the business, and then enjoy the yoga.

If you've arrived after the opening meditation has begun, please either wait for the meditation to conclude before entering, or sit and join the meditation, rather than rolling out your mat and disrupting the stillness.

Classes will be closed 15 minutes after the start-time.

Please switch cell phones to off, even when stored in the cubbies. There is no acceptable circumstance for a ringing cell phone in the asana room.

Please remove your shoes before walking on the hardwood floors. It's part cleanliness and part respect for the space and tradition.

If you must leave class before the 90 minutes, please take an early Savasana (final relaxation pose), which will alert the instructor to your planned early exit. Please depart prior to – not during – the group's Savasana or final meditation.

If you have an injury – or any other issue that will affect your practice – it is your responsibility to inform the instructor prior to class, so that they can recommend variations on the poses.

Please be mindful of the designated Level of the class, for yourself and when inviting friends and family to practice with you. Level I-II classes and above will require a certain degree of basic understanding of the poses, as well as a certain level of stamina and strength. A class designated Level I-II or above is not intended to be a first-ever yoga class.

If you have a yoga practice (no matter how sporadic) – for the sake of personal hygiene – you should have your own yoga mat. The rental mats are intended for students brand new to yoga and out-of-town guests.

Everyone appreciates your consideration.
