March is here and with it we see the end of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Regardless of a persons interest in the sports that are represented at any Olympic Games, they remain an inspiring example of the strength of human resolve and the triumph of the spirit. A reminder that we are all capable of amazing things if we set our minds to it. We are very excited about some NEW classes we are adding to the schedule this month! (including a 3rd Healthy Backs class on Sundays, please read a great student testimonial below). We have also made some changes to our existing classes that we hope help keep our schedule to your liking. We are very proud to be offering an amazing benefit this month in support of a Humanitarian Mission to Haiti. The two hour class will be lead by Hanna Gilan and include a healing Sound Bath with live planetary gongs and crystal bowls. An extraordinary opportunity not to be missed and for a great cause. More details are below. Have a wonderful month and we look forward to seeing you at the studio!
Shanti, Your friends at Black Dog Yoga.

A Letter from a student...
"Hello -
I want to let you know that I think the yin/yoga/healthy back class is such a 'healthy' strengthening compliment to the yoga flow classes that somehow the word needs to get out. My neck and shoulder improve after each class and I can glide my way thru the flow class that much better - more focused and gently. I'm up to 3 classes this week and hope for 4 classes a week in a couple weeks.
Maybe there were more people in class this week than Sigrid would ideally like but I know the women on each side of me were getting into it and each said she really liked it. I think BDY has a good thing going here. AND, I can't wait to try an X-Factor (or one of those) class.
Thanks for all your hard work. I'm so happy to be back in class!!!"
Thank you so much for your letter! We are very excited to let you know that we will now be offering the Healthy Backs/Yin Yoga class THREE times a week:
Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:45a-12:00p with Sigrid Matthews Sundays 11:30a-12:45p with Mischa Allen NEW!

Chappell Westlake
Chappell Westlake Grew up on the shores of Tripoli (Lybia), the lush hills of Cochabamba (Bolivia) and caused all sorts of trouble running around in the museums of London, before family landed in Tulsa, OK! She Always LOVED to dance and won state and national honors for her achievements as a teenage ballerina. She honors her ballet masters that she studied with and performed for for her inspiration: the Jasinskis (Tulsa Ballet Theater), Arthur Mitchell, George Balenchine, Tatiana Leskova, Georgina Parkinson. However - and much more interesting - She also claims inspiration from her biggest crushes EVER; Gene Kelly, Roger Daltry, Ted Koppel and power-yogi master, Bryan Kest, who was responsible for introducing her to Vipassana Meditation!
Her important lessons on mind/body/spirit awareness began at 19, when she collapsed from physical and mental exhaustion. Letting go of her dreams of New York City, Chappell headed to college in Texas, where she graduated with BFA in Art and Art History. Her first instructional experience was when she was asked to teach ballet to football and basketball players as a form of integrated training.
Her first introduction to yoga was the Iyengar Institute Los Angeles in 1997. Chappell says that while she has had the honor to study with many masters, different disciplines, philosophies and teacher trainings, still her favorite part of this journey is being a student. She is a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certified personal/functional trainer as well as a RYT ((Registered Yoga Teacher) and dance instructor. Her work has been featured in "LA Confidential", on "Access Hollywood" and even "E! Entertainment".
When asked about her Dog Pound classes, Chappell offers this; "Belly RockNSoul" and "Nasty to the Core", were created as alternative mind/body disciplines that compliment a yoga practice, while challenging the mind's perspectives and the body's ability to function optimally. The classes are safe environments for students to explore and challenge themselves, while having a great time in doing so. It's important to be good to oneself, to challenge ourselves effectively and rest when needed - and yet so often, that is the most difficult thing for us to do."
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." Harold Thurman Whitman
Thank you Chappell. Please come take a class with Chappell during the month of March- ON US! See the coupon below.

Benefit for Haiti - a special humanitarian mission With Hanna Gilan
Saturday, March 27th 6:30p-8:30p
Please join us for a very special event to support Hanna Gilan's sister Aimee Ysebaert on a humanitarian mission to Haiti . Aimee is a registered Pediatric Nurse who will be making a trip to Haiti April 17 - 25th with Friends of Haiti to help families and children in medical crisis.
A message from Aimee: I have been a Registered Nurse for twenty years and have worked in a wide variety of clinical settings as well as providing care across the age continuum. I have worked with the Oneida Tribe of Indians in the development and implementation of their Pandemic Disaster Plan, as well as developing teaching modules for the teen parent program. In addition I have been a foster parent for Brown County for the last year and have been providing a safe, consistent and loving home for a ten year old boy with severe behavior and emotional difficulties. This mission that I am going on will provide health care to three villages outside of Port au Prince: Thomazeau, Grand Boulage and Mahotiere. We will be working in tandem with the local orphanages and also establishing a health care clinic for anyone in need of medical services. 100% of your donation will go to this humanitarian mission and I want to thank you in advance for your support.
This extraordinary event will be a two-hour special practice including a flow, restorative and as a special treat of a live Planetary Gong Sound Bath.
A Sound Bath is a concert of sacred sounds. The term "Sound Bath" is used because you are "bathed" in the vibrations of all the instruments played. Jamie typically plays a combination of Paiste Planetary gongs and Crystal Singing Bowls. When played in a room with good resonance you can feel the vibration run from the instruments through the floor and into your entire body. You will leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated!
Suggested donation - $20
